I attended the UNICEF Baby Friendly conference in Harrogate. This was very inspiring and for me the highlights were the 2 presentations by Robin Grille. Parenting for a peaceful world. By the age of 3 years 90% of the brain mass is already developed. The brain has 10 empathy centres which can grow or atrophy according to the environment. Violence is a result of brain changes due to high cortisol levels affecting the frontal brain and the empathy capacity. Conversely oxytocin enables the brain to grow. Love, affection, closeness and responsiveness to your baby produces oxytocin in abundance and lays the foundations needed for healthy mental development. Violence is not in the genes but a result of the environment. To those affected, the question should be "What happened to you? rather than "What's wrong with you".
